Tokoeka evolved into Brown Kiwi, Rowi and the four varieties of Tokoeka.
One variety is the very rare Haast Tokoeka, a mountain-loving kiwi.
 |
The most abundant Tokoeka variety is the Stewart Island Tokoeka. It has a relatively stable population of about 20,000 birds. |
Southern Fiordland Tokoeka and Northern Fiordland Tokoeka can be found high up in the mountains of their South Island home.
Except for the Haast Tokoeka, the other varieties are generally larger than their northern Brown Kiwi cousins, and can grow almost as big as the Great Spotted Kiwi.
