Story 2: The Great Nest Egg Miracle
Imagine you are Rob from the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre:
· Write a diary recording the events from the time 006 arrived in the egg until he hatches.
· Make a flowchart of how a kiwi hatches.
· What has to be done when looking after an incubating egg? Write a list of tasks for a worker at the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre.
· Conduct and record a video (or taped) interview with each of the people (and 006!) involved in the Nest Egg story. Try to gain their thoughts and feelings about what happened, and why their roles are so important. Different members of the class can role play the various characters in the story. Write a script, and develop a storyboard outline before recording.
· Retell the 006 story using a Hyperstudio stack or other multimedia authoring program, and developing your own drawings and illustrations. Scan these images and incorporate them into your presentation. Record an oral commentary onto your show, describing and explaining the events depicted on each slide.

· Use the Kiwi Recovery website to learn more about the habitat of the kiwi. Write a story telling of 006s first few days on Limestone Island, the sort of things he sees and learns there, the friends he makes, how he finds and makes his home etc.
· Research as much as you can about the way in which kiwi (or birds generally) develop and survive whilst in the egg. Try to find out and report on what ‘special features’ an egg has which makes it such a unique, ‘self contained’ environment. You may consider presenting your findings to the group using a computer slideshow or wall posted format.
· Why was Limestone Island chosen as a release site for kiwi in Northland? What would be the requirements for a release site?
· Make a list of criteria for suitable release sites. Find other possible release sites for kiwi in your local area, or in New Zealand as a whole. Justify your choices.
