Kiwi are known as an ‘honorary mammal’ because of their many un-bird-like characteristics. For example, while most bird bones are light and hollow, to help them fly, kiwi bones are heavy and filled with marrow, like a mammal.

Even though much of the work is done by volunteers, there are still traps and baits to buy and possibly a trapper to hire on contract. And there may be big ambitious plans, such as building a predator-proof fence for a kiwi chick créche. The list of things that need cool cash can seem daunting for a community group.
Schools get creative in helping raise funds
There are many creative ways schools and school children can raise money to help fund kiwi projects. Because BNZ covers all the Trust’s operating costs, every cent, 100% of what you donate to BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust, goes to kiwi conservation projects and research.
The Fundraising Institute of New Zealand has some school resources here, which can be easily adapted to raise money for kiwi conservation projects.
Some simple fundraising ideas
A few simple fundraising ideas are listed below—you probably can come up with many more:
- Run a mufti day and collect gold coins for kiwi.
- Ask your home economics teacher if your class can bake cupcakes or cookies and sell them—you can take orders in advance.
- Organise a car wash in the middle of your town’s busiest supermarket car park. A gleaming car will be waiting for people when they’re done buying rations.
- Hold an art competition where entrants create kiwi-themed works, and then auction them off. Ask a local service club to run the event for you; their members could bid for the art.
- Install donation boxes around your school.
- Run a sponsored sporting event using the FundRaiseOnline site described below.
So, set yourself a goal and go for it.

Some of the ways you can promote your efforts and get sponsors, and also help raise awareness about kiwi are:
- Send an email to everyone you know, and ask your parents to do the same.
- Give a talk at your school assembly or ask someone from DOC or BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust to come and speak.
- Get some kiwi brochures, posters and information and set up a display.
- Organise to have a demonstration at your school about how dogs can be trained to avoid kiwi.
