Dogs: A potential threat to kiwi, and, kiwi habitat in a pine forest
Take action to help save kiwi – If you live near or visit places where wild kiwi still survive, there are many things you can do to help protect these special birds.

If you own a dog, always keep it on a lead and have it undergo kiwi avoidance training. Cat owners can help kiwi by keeping these nocturnal hunters inside at night.

There are many things that landowners, farmers and forest owners can do to protect any kiwi on their land.

If you hunt or set traps in places kiwi live, how you go about your business has a big impact on the birds. All hunting dogs should go through kiwi avoidance training.

Did You Know?

Female kiwi don’t lay the biggest egg in proportion to their weight. The world’s smallest seabird does, the tiny storm petrel.  Weighing only 34 grams, she produces eggs up to 30% of her weight – and she has to fly with them on board.
