Kiwi Protection
BNZ Save the Kiwi has produced three very useful resources full of practical information about what we can do to help save kiwi.
The How to Save Kiwi DVD provides basic tutorials and information about the suite of challenges and opportunities we face in trying to save kiwi – from stopping dog deaths and controlling predators, to how to manage plantation forests.
It is aimed at volunteers and agencies that are involved in on-the-ground work, and can also be used to train others.
Whatever your angle, we recommend viewing chapter 1 first – All about kiwi – as it provides a good overview and introduction to the work.
The DVD has been produced by BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust, in association with New Zealand Kiwi Foundation, and with support from the Department of Conservation

The 44-page How to Save Kiwi booklet provides practical information on where and how to find kiwi, control predators and protect habitat.

Our Kiwi : Basic Facts About Kiwi – Flyer
This brochure provides a good, simple introduction to kiwi, the threats they face and what people can do to help. It is an A4 sheet, folded twice.
Free copies are available in bundles of 25. The brochure can be used as a handout at meetings, in conference kits, field days, workshops, BNZ branches, cafes – wherever you see an opportunity to help spread the word about kiwi.

Sustainable management of brown kiwi and other threatened birds in Northland
This 2006 report was prepared for the Department of Conservation and NZ Landcare Trust. It provides a regional context for putting the Kiwi Recovery Plan and the Kiwi Best Practice Manual into practice, by providing guidance to all stakeholders and interested parties involved with kiwi in Northland.
Kiwi Information
A lot of useful information about kiwi is available, including a stocktake that describes progress in kiwi conservation and curriculum-based resources for schools.
This report is a stocktake published by the Department of Conservation in 2007, to show progress with kiwi conservation, describe who is doing the work, and assess what the future holds for kiwi. It provides a good summary of the birds’ status in 2007, as well as providing background facts and figures.
It is available to download from the Department’s website.
BNZ Save the Kiwi developed a curriculum-based resource for teachers which weaves together environmental education, tikanga Māori and science in a flexible format suitable for both primary and secondary students. Activity cards are available as part of the kit.

2010 National Kiwi Hui - Proceedings
BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust and DOC jointly host a National Kiwi Hui annually, for kiwi practitioners from around the country to come together and discuss latest technologies and developments in the industry.
These proceedings are a true account of the two day conference held in Queenstown in April this year. The 2010 proceedings and DVD were produced with the support of the Biodiversity Advice Fund.
You can download a copy of the 2010 National Kiwi Hui proceedings, and a copy of the DVD is available from the Trust on request, while stocks last.
Where to find information and help: Resources for community kiwi projects
Many of the kiwi resources available on this website have been compiled into a database for community-based people. It is available as a handout at Department of Conservation and other agency offices, or you can download a copy here (164KB).

Kaitaia Kiwi Directory and Guide
This practical guide and directory has been pulled together to help protect Northland brown kiwi in the greater Kaitaia area. It contains a summary of the roles of agencies and individuals involved in the protection of kiwi, an overview of kiwi protection methods and ideas for future planning and networking.
